Brief description
Scheme developed in New Zealand in the 1980s but not been much used in the UK until recently. It is intended to boost both accuracy and comprehension, in particular the comprehension of children whose understanding of texts lags behind their reading accuracy. It is based on two sessions a week, to enable children to develop confidence in using the four reciprocal reading strategies (predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising). The strategies can also be used in shared reading. The teacher models the use of the strategies. The children take ownership of these tasks as they become familiar with them.
Effectiveness
For reading accuracy and comprehension in Y5-6: remarkable
